Featured Recipes: Gardening Tips: Battling the Beetle
You can try telling visitors that you're growing a new variety of arugula this year called 'Filigree' but you won't fool anyone. Almost every gardener has seen the effects of a flea beetle attack - all the leaves are riddled with tiny holes. For some it's a cosmetic problem thEy can live with. But to minimize the damage, try keeping your arugula very well-watered in the spring, from planting time onward. This will produce more vigorous plants that can better withstand predation. And try a late summer sowing since the beetles are not there in the fall. |

#2970 Twinkle Escarole: 60 days
Known as “scarola” to Italians, escarole is an open-leaved chicory with a creamy-yellow heart. Twinkle is our chosen variety, a reliable producer with a unique, bitter-sweet flavor. Twinkle likes it cool; wait until late summer to sow this delightful vegetable for harvest in the cool of late fall. Escarole has long been popular in ethnic comfort food. French and Greek cooks combine the leaves with cooled, cooked beets in a wonderful salad paired with either goat cheese or feta. Italian cooks tie the head with string and grill to accompany meats.

#3120 Quetzali Watermelon: 80-90 days
Perfectly suited to the home garden, Quetzali’s globe-shaped fruits weigh in at nine to twelve pounds and grow quickly on sturdy, disease-resistant vines. Known as an ‘icebox type’, this compact melon fits into the average refrigerator. Quetzali refers to the revered bird of South American fame with intense green coloration and a long red tail. The skin is deep, shiny green with splashes of lime and the red flesh is firm and juicy, with hardly any seeds. This is high in sugar: it measures up at 12% Brix and that is sweet! (OP.)

These dark green pods look lovely in the garden but even better on the platter! This heavy producer has 3” pods that are wonderfully crisp and sweet. The tendrils grasp hold of each other and are self-supporting to about 30”. Make sure you pick the shiny flat pods daily; watch for escapees hiding under the leaves! Snow Green is perfect steamed or stir-fried: try adding minced ginger root and mild, minced shallots instead of garlic so you don’t overwhelm the delicate fresh taste of the peas! Add a dash of sesame oil to finish.
